Following in the steps of Leethal, Rocket and Tich (well partly),a mate and I are planning a ride across the Nullarbor. I'm leaving from the Sunshine Coast and joining up with him in the Barossa.

Any tips pointers etc gratefully welcomed and in particular the best and worst time to cross.

Also, which is the best direction to cross, East to West or other way round if we decide on a one way trip?

We're looking to do this within the next 12 months.

Cheers and thanks

When depends on what climates you prefer, we left late April and the south was cold but not bitterly so, you still need good gear though. We found it still very hot up North and humid, it was supposed to be the start of winter but that year winter came late. It's pretty uncomfortable when you ride with all the gear and you consume a lot of water.

Which direction? Well if I did it again at the same time then I would go anti as we had head winds everywhere going clockwise, even though Rocket assured us that headwinds were a myth in winter!!!!!! I have done the Nullarbor a lot but never before by bike, I once wore out a new set of front tyres on a "66 Kombi going into a NW all the way from SA to Perth, steering against it.

If you are bush camping as we did then expect to get some soft sand practice in SA and WA, the best spots are off the highway a couple of hundred metres, but well woth the effort. The SW corner of WA is very anti free camping, the councils, not the people. Locals helped us find spots especially if we spent a few $$ in their store/pub/servo.

You can always send some of your winter stuff home from Perth, fuel is not an issue the way we went, maybe 300kms up in north WA was the biggest stretch, we usually filled up at most opportunities once we were out in the scrub.

Any questions just put them up.

G'day Leethal

Mate, thanks for your advice, some really good stuff there. I'm not surprised about your story concerning the Kombi, I've heard similar stories from people towing caravans.

Any suggestions on points of interest along the way?

Cheers
